growing old on the shelf

i just keep hoping hoping hoping

that uneaten fruit will return

if i can keep you alive

after they forgot you

maybe i'll wake up too

sprout above ground

tucked back under the earth

by still-warm hands

don't care if you are misshapen

or never bear fruit
